Drum Tab: A Spirit of Burning

When 3 Doors Down took Bad Charism on the road with them, I got the awesome experience of hanging out with several great drummers: Daniel Adair, who was playing with 3 Doors Down; Kevin Soffera, who was playing with Seether; Jeremy Taggart who was, and is still, playing with Our Lady Peace. During this time, I got several impromptu lessons. One lesson in particular, from Kevin, contributed directly to my ability to perform "A Spirit of Burning." I had previously struggled playing even basic double-kick patterns evenly, and Kevin’s advice was simple and effective.

1) Lower your drum throne so that your legs are bent at a 90-degree angle.

2) Imagine that there are strings attached to your knees and that, in order to play, you must pull the strings straight up to raise them and then release the strings, allowing your feet to drop onto the pedals.
“Master of puppets I’m pulling your strings...” -- Metallica
3) Pay close attention to how your feet naturally fall against the pedals.

(Apologies to those who are disturbed by marionettes.)

Anyway, this may not work for everyone, but it definitely changed (and improved) the way I play.

You can find the song here.

Disclaimer

I don't pretend to think that any of the drum parts I write are particularly innovative or difficult. However, I hope that beginners will find the tablature useful and, perhaps, more seasoned drummers will find it convenient. -- Jason
